- Cross streets with caution. Cross at a corner, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Don’t assume that because you see the driver, the driver sees you. Walk, don’t run, across the street.
- Walk on Sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible.
- Children under 12 should not be without adult supervision.
- Be a safe pedestrian. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Never dart into the street or cross between parked cars.
Be smart:
- Decorate costumes/bags with reflective tape or stickers.
- Face paint and makeup are better for children because they do not hinder vision like masks do.
- Kids should carry glow sticks or flashlights in order to see and be seen better.

- Park your mobile phone– wait until you’ve stopped to answer
- Watch for children darting into the street– kids can cross anywhere, and most deaths happen at spots other than intersections
- Yield to pedestrians– children might not practice pedestrian safety, so be alert
- Communicate with other drivers– always use turn signals, if you have to pull over to drop off or pick up your kids, use hazard lights
